De Vooruitgang pumping station was built in 1908 to drain the Groote Polder. The Groote Polder is the land between the slaperdijk and the sea dyke between Oterdum and Termunterzijl. People lived in this area, formerly known as Oosterhorn, before the Middle Ages. They lived on mounds, made of dung and waste, later clay; this to protect themselves from the washing water. The polder bordered as far as the former village of Oterdum; Oterdum had to make way for the port development of Delfzijl. The small building of the pumping station was completely destroyed during the 2nd WW, but rebuilt the same hair again.
